Reminder: Third OTW Chat on Saturday, January 19, 2008!

A quick reminder, ladies and jellyspoons! We announced our plans for a third IRC chat on Saturday, January 19th at 20:00 AWT, 11:00 GMT and 06:00 EST with Cathy Cupitt from the board attending [in this post].

(You can also find instructions on downloading an IRC client for your particular OS and information on how we run our IRC chats in the aforementioned post.)

If you are planning to attend, please comment to the linked post with your screen name and your question by 14:00 AWT (19th), 05:00 GMT (19th) and 00:00 EST (19th) so we can gauge how much interest there is.

So far, we haven't had any confirmed participants. *g* As we mentioned previously, we will not be able to hold the chat unless at least ten (10) people commit to attending.

If there aren't enough interested participants in this time zone at this particular time, we'll reschedule the chat or find a different way to continue the public dialogue between OTW and all interested parties.

Thank you!

I have arranged to be home in time, but don't have any questions myself ;)

I'll just have to comfort myself at TNNA (where there is yarn but not free). Posted by: Anne at April PM My research in the matter of attire tells me that you shouldn't wear shorts, bikinis, thongs (the type for your feet, not butt floss I didn't find anything saying that butt floss was a no no) or pj's.

I really wanted to participate in this, but unfortunately I haven's been able to re-arrange my other commitments tomorrow. I do hope you try to schedule a few more chats aimed at the non-US supporters (I'm based in Europe but this one could have worked for me because it's scheduled on a Saturday.) Hopefully next time :)

Some of my experiences have been rather forgettable, but I want to point out one that I'm sure your folks will be interested in.

I'd like to come but I'm having a party tonight and good hosts don't chat. :P FWIW, the relative lack of interest in this time is probably the small size of the group in this timezone seriously compounded by the fact that, well, those times are Saturday night. Saturday night is not generally a good meeting time? It's probably the one night a week I will always be out and, while I can't speak for everyone, others may be in the same boat. (I know that this is about finding a day that's good for those OTWers who work, but weekday evening chats might generate more response.)

Yeah, we're still trying to find the best ways to organize these sorts of discussions to make them convenient for everyone. Mind you, when we scheduled the Europe-friendly chat on a weekday evening, there weren't many takers then either.

It's possible (she said, speaking entirely for herself for a moment) that we Yanks are more likely to show up at chats because we're yappier. :)

Or more likely, there are vastly more of you, so it's more likely that there will be some who can make the time. The fewer people are there, the more likely they'll all fail their availability roll *descends into D&D mode temporarily*.

I can't make it, alas. Saturday nights are not a good time. :(

In case it does go ahead, my questions are thus, if anyone can ask them:

[livejournal.com profile] perfica already already touched on this (http://community.livejournal.com/otw_news/22240.html?thread=680160#t680160) but, my understanding is pretty much all that sexual depictions of persons under 18, fictional or not, are illegal under Australian law, which deems them child pornography. It's not just illegal to create and read or view these stories, but possibly even to just visit sites containing them. Australia is not the only country that has enacted this sort of legislation. How do you plan to reconcile the aim of providing safe space for all fans to share and host work with legal restrictions that, in some places, unequivocally criminalise some types of work for many fans? Do you intend to support fans who challenge these laws?

Also, is OTW aware of the access systems declaration (http://www.acma.gov.au/WEB/STANDARD/pc=PC_310907), which, from tomorrow, "places obligations on all content service providers to check that individuals accessing restricted content provided in Australia are at least 15 years of age for MA15+ content or 18 years of age for R18+ content", and of recent moves by the Australian Federal Government to institute compulsorily ISP filtering (http://www.alp.org.au/media/1107/mscoit190.php) to all homes, schools and libraries? An archive containing fiction targeted at adults could easily be caught in such a filter. It is also worth noting that lists of banned sites are not currently made public, and that while it is possible to opt out of the proposed filter, the access declaration means that government is in a prime position to block content that violates Australian law even if you do opt out. Does the board plan to challenge the imposition of such censorship regimes? Do you have any alternative access plans in place in the instance the archive is blacklisted?
