A change of seasons: Thoughts on summer songs and reading

Are there songs and books you'll associate with this summer? Are you looking forward to what the change in season will bring in terms of new movies, shows, and things to read?

For those of you heading into spring, congratulations. I’m all about spring and summer, and it’s tough saying goodbye to them.

There are reminders of the turn of season in fandom; new shows coming soon, favorites returning, bigger films on the way to theaters. And then there are the reflections appearing online now, re: summer music and summer reading.

For me, summer’s less about reading and more about being outside. Fall is when books start to call to me again. I’ve got a couple of upcoming releases pre-ordered: “Big Magic” from Elizabeth Gilbert and the novel “City on Fire” about life in New York City in the seventies.

As for a song of the summer, well, now that I don’t drive a car I don’t hear the radio and that puts me out of the loop on what’s most popular. I kind of have to seek out music – and what I like tends to be more niche, less top 40.

Take a look at the links below and tell me what you think: Do we really need a ‘song of the summer?’ Is there a book you took on vacation, or are looking forward to reading?

The summery timing of this is, I think, coincidental, but in terms of song/fandom crossovers, I've found Mika's "Happy Ending" much in my mind. Actually, the seasonal connection is the spring run of Game of Thrones, which introduced me to This great vid (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCREHZ7WHYk). Since then, however, this song has been making me think of Vash and Wolfwood in Trigun and, in a more against-the-grain reading, Achilles and Patroclus (which led me to the odd realization that Vash is the Achilles of Trigun. Who knew?). And as I have been teaching Gilgamesh this term, I have been pondering that it's a pretty good song for that story too, though perhaps the "little bits of love" are a bit less obvious. A song that truly says a lot about the human condition.
