Thanks To Everyone!

Thanks to everyone who participated in the OTW's recent membership drive: by posting about the drive or about the org, by sharing one of our awesome lolcats, and most especially by donating. It will take a few days for the last promised donations to clear, and then your humble DevMem team will take a few days off to decompress, but we hope to post soon with some nifty statistics and graphics so that you can share our glee.

A few folks contacted us late in the drive to say, "I'm not able to donate now, but I hope to have the money to donate sometime soon -- can I still donate after the drive is over?" The answer is yes! Our formal March 2009 membership drive has ended, which means we'll stop proclaiming the awesomeness of the OTW quite so loudly from the rooftops, but you can support the OTW with a donation at any time.

Thanks for being a part of the OTW!

.
Question: So I've finally donated, and joined, and I have a username and password. Is the Archive ready for anyone to upload their fanfic, or are we still working on the beta testing? *shrug* I'm not quite sure what to do now.

Hi, [livejournal.com profile] starwatcher307, thanks for joining the OTW! Your membership is totally unconnected to use of any of our services (Fanlore, the Archive of Our Own, Transformative Works and Cultures, transformativeworks.org), and simply gives you a vote in annual Board elections; my guess is that your user name and password are for transformativeworks.org so that you can leave authenticated comments on our blog. The Archive is still in beta testing, and we're working hard to get it to the point where we can open to everyone who wants an account there.

I hope this clears up your question!

my guess is that your user name and password are for transformativeworks.org

That's correct. Your transformativeworks.org username and password can be used on the main OTW website to leave authenticated comments, upload a userpic, and set your preferred language.

You can create a separate account (with the same username, if you like) on Fanlore, and on the Archive once it opens up for account creation.

question regarding donation?

[personal profile] ender24 2009-03-22 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
is it actually possible to just donate via paypal , without giving the OTW all my RL details like Name, address, country and so on?

(I am a bit confused, because I don't remember, for example, when buying LJ gifts or donating money to original fic writers via paypal, that all those details were asked)

I apologize!

[personal profile] ender24 2009-03-22 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
its past 1 AM right now, I should have read your site properly :)
my question has been answered, I see there is a link for a paypal donation without all those details necessary.
ender24: (Default)

ahh, then I am sorry again!

[personal profile] ender24 2009-03-24 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't mean for use to try to typing that long ass response, I just thought, I must have overlook something, coz I could not imagine there would not be a way to donate without all those details.
especially in lieu of all that racefail disaster and the outing of the RL details and names of fans involved.

That said, I trust OTW as much as about most online shops , ebay and amazon, and those 20 LJ friends, who already know my RL name and address, so even if there is a chance in the future, that the data of OTW could get compromise and some idiots wants to hack into *our* servers, and blow out all my details, of how I am fannish addicted porn fiend, I am pretty safe still.
I am not in any job field, or country, or ethnical background, that could get me killed or put into an asylum, if its known, that I like to talk and think about fictional characters *g*

that said, no need for anyone to talk to me, coz I already donated and became member.

so thanks again for you trying to find out the answer, which I should have seen anyway before :D

errr, still me :)

I am off to sleep any minute, but I was wondering, is the openID login just not working for me, or is it a general problem?
I did not bother to sign on for yet another account, coz I thought, I could simply use my LJ account an OpenID account to login into otw, but it gives me this message:

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

QuickPost Quickpost this image to Myspace, Digg, Facebook, and others!

It's not just you. :)

The OpenID login on transformativeworks.org works by associating an OpenID with an existing website account. So, you'll need to start by creating a user account on the website. Once you've created an account, you can go to http://transformativeworks.org/user and add an OpenID identity. After that you can log on using your OpenID. Feel free to contact the Webmasters directly if you run into any problems.

(And thanks very much for taking the time to provide a screenshot!)

thanks Kristen!

for the explanation, I created an account, and associated it with my LJ acccount, so it worked, and the log in with the LJ open ID account also worked.
except, even while working, its giving me this message:

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

QuickPost Quickpost this image to Myspace, Digg, Facebook, and others!

its not really important, as I said, its working, but I thought, I let you guys know anyway.

PS: I may not be in tech support in my job field, but having lots of clients, who are less web or internet savvy , I am very fond of screenshots *g*
it helps to explain things to them ;)

nobody in OTW can make a connection

[personal profile] ender24 2009-03-25 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
lol, frances, I do trust that no one in OTW is deliberately going to sit down, and try to make connections between your members RL name and their fannish nickname.
however, as someone, who is running 3 yahoo groups, and several LJ communities (some with up to 12,000 members), I can assure you, nothing is more easier than to make a connection once you have that certain fan's RL name, and lets say, their email address.
because I bet with you, in at least 50% of all cases, part or their entire email contact address , even the ones linked to their RL bank or paypal accounts, are having their fannish nickname in it.
lets say, their fannish (on LJ and elsewhere in other forums) name is janedoe5000. Their RL name however Marie Mueller.
BUT, their contact address that they give out everywhere, including but not limited to OTW; paypal, and amazon and ebay, and is linked to their RLname, is lalala, janedoe5000@gmail.com .
the connection is not hard to make, right *g* ?

its not me trying to ridicule the OTW's security or the ethics of the people like you who are helping to run it, but its merely both my fannish and RL experiences, that tells me, in this age and decade of the net, there ain't such a thing as "no connection".
and most fans are a combination of carelessness and obviousness.
Until they get the FBI in front of their doors. and I did not make that FBI part up, nor are we talking about illegal file sharing.
it did happened a couple of years ago.
Just a girl, who talked about in a not flattering way about former Pres. Bush in her LJ entries, and thought, land of free speech and such, right?
well, seems like after 9/11, it was not quite that safe to talk freely, even in your own blog.
she got a visit, and an FBI file on her.
