poll: select a URL (round one of two)

As per the discussion in this post, the [livejournal.com profile] fanarchive project needs a name--more than one, in fact. At the moment, we need to identify the URL which the archive will use.

There were far too many suggestions for a radio button poll, so voting will take place in two parts. For this first part, vote for as many or as few options as you like. Voting runs through 17.00 (5:00 PM) Monday, June 4. Monday night I'll post a poll of the top 10 choices for the final decision; that voting will go through Monday, June 11.

[Poll #994162]

Is it possible to vote negatively?

fanslit.com

fan slit?!

sure it's not penismightier or powergenitalia but still. URL double entendre should be avoiding, I think.

[identity profile] absolutedestiny.livejournal.com 2007-05-30 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm aware of that but so was pen is mightier dot com :)

[identity profile] sol-se.livejournal.com 2007-05-30 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It's probably not a good sign that I'm still giggling over "penis mightier" is it? Apparently, I'm 12 today. Oh, fan slit.

I like the .orgs, as they come with the connotation of the "not for profit" purpose that the archive has.

Yes, I'm glad to see that so far, when there are otherwise exact same choices between .com and .net or .org the numbers seem to mostly favour the latter two (although there are exceptions). I know it's a hangover and .com doesn't necessarily mean it's commercial anymore, but I still want to keep away from it for that original meaning.

I like .net in preference to .org (but I voted for both). For me it has a more lateral/horizontal mental imagery than .org which I take as more hierarchical, and so .net feels for me to better fit women's communication styles.

If we go with a choice where more than one TLD is available (.org, .com, .net) I suggest we should buy up the others and redirect them to our site. Domains are pretty cheap ($10-$20 a year).

[identity profile] elliemurasaki.livejournal.com 2007-05-30 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to say I love 'scheherazade.us', but I didn't vote for it, because nobody will ever remember the correct spelling of Scheherazade. I wasn't even sure you'd got it right in the poll till I tried it with a capital S and discovered Firefox likes it that way.

[identity profile] rivkat.livejournal.com 2007-05-30 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
All else equal, I favor (1) a .com, because that's what most people will guess by default if they can't remember, and (2) a url where we could buy and redirect the .net and .org addresses to the same places as the .com -- that is, where none of the three are taken.

Actually, I would go the other way around. Make it a .org, and redirect .com and .net. The reasons for this are that (a) this is a non-profit, so .org fits better, and (b) I know from experience that .com domains get hit harder by spam attacks than .org and .net domains.

[identity profile] rivkat.livejournal.com 2007-05-30 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool with me! That gets me what I want (ownership of the likely-mistyped variant) and satisfies the desire to announce nonprofit status too.

Archive name - Redirects

[identity profile] taverymate.livejournal.com 2007-06-04 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! Absolutely buy all three or the confusion can seriously disrupt traffic and usage patterns. And I'm with you on having .com and .net redirect to .org for both reasons that you cite.

[identity profile] rez-lo.livejournal.com 2007-05-30 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
A few of the choices made me think I should ask, just to be sure: isn't the archive contemplated as a repository for fanworks beyond fanfiction as well? Vidding, art, and so on? The "lit" and "writes" and "scribe" entries seem to suggest otherwise.

[identity profile] par-avion.livejournal.com 2007-05-30 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I really hope that the name is broader than just fiction.

Also, I seem to recall that [livejournal.com profile] shayheyred's suggestion was

ourchive (a play on words)

not ourarchive

but I can't remember whether that suggestion was made in this community or in [livejournal.com profile] astolat's journal.

[identity profile] sabbrielle.livejournal.com 2007-05-31 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but don't we want the domain name to be a "variant or subset" of the name? And if the name is "ourchive"...

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_swallow/ 2007-06-04 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
(I'd love to see transformativeart.org as a shorter-to-type and more-inclusive version of transformativefiction.org, etc!)

I'm not sure if you mean that you just wanted to have a two-step process to narrow things down, because there were so many choices, or if you don't know that it's possible to have more than 15 choices for a poll question. If it's the latter, here's the code:
[lj-poll name='PollName' whovote='all' whoview='all']
[lj-pq type='drop'] (I assume it's "radio" for radio buttons, but I'd have to check, as I always do drop down menus.)
Question Text
[lj-pi]choice01[/lj-pi]
[lj-pi]choice02[/lj-pi]
[/lj-pq]
[/lj-poll]

You can add as many [lj-pi] lines as you want per question, many more than 15. I don't know why the auto-poll creator won't go higher.

I'm pretty sure this isn't the right place to do this, but I just wanted to throw this out there: I have an eNom account and I would be happy to donate any domain registrations needed for this.

[identity profile] sabbrielle.livejournal.com 2007-05-31 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
I wish ourchive.org and ourchive.net were up there.

[identity profile] sabbrielle.livejournal.com 2007-05-31 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
May I also suggest that when we get to having a radio poll, it should come in two parts? The beginning as one question and the end as another? (e.g. 1, "Anarchiveofourown" or "fanarchive" and 2, .com or .org)

[identity profile] mylexie.livejournal.com 2007-05-31 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi!

A friend of mine and I are looking at the possibility of hosting a new blog site - under DUTCH law. (Less problems with adult fic, etc.) I've got a small poll up to ask whether people would be interested. Would you please pimp this? [livejournal.com profile] duelist sent me here..

The post/poll is here (http://mylexie.livejournal.com/159135.html).

Thank you!

Personally I like fanfictional.com for the primary url - it's catchy and also informative.

For secondary, third, fourth, etc. I'd go for the same domain name with .net, .org, and possibly .tv and/or .info. Best to stick to the same domain name, imho.

fyi, Godaddy shows fan-archive.com already taken - unless it's owned by someone associated with this effort?

and fenfiction is available in .com as well as .org and .net

Maybe I'm missing something, I've not been following all the discussion here, jmho since I run some fanfic archives and host others and have dealt with domain names.

Fan-Fix.org/com/net could get confusing. Once upon a time fanfix.com was a huge archive for Star Wars fanfiction.

One thing that I wanted to make sure wasn't missed from the earlier post - our German population reports that the word "Fic" can't be used in public everywhere, as it sounds just like the word for "Fuck". Hopefully this comment can help steer some voters away from the (fortunately relatively few) URLs that include it.

In regards to the fandomonium options, there is already a fan message board at one of those addys...

Fan-fix

[identity profile] angelofsnow.livejournal.com 2007-06-01 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
I really like the fan-fix entries. I remember the old (really old) fanfix.net was a Star Wars fan fiction archive that has since closed. The name has a lot of history and is short and easy to remember. Also a plus, it doesn't use the word "fic" which is problematic in German.

Deadlines are there for a reason, but here's an out-there suggestion that missed the boat. There seem to be some similarities between the thinking behind the fan archive proposal and at least some of the principles behind the International Co-Operative Alliance (http://www.ica.coop/coop/index.html). How about www.fan.coop? The fact that it's in a very seldom-used TLD makes it distinctive and it would make our co-operative nature really stand out. Additionally I rather like the word "coop", pronounced to rhyme with loop, and don't feel the word "coop" has negative/restrictive connotations.

Reading the comment, I gotta say that "ourchive" would be my favourite, too. With .com and .net pointing to the .org version (given that all are actually available).

And I quite like chives, as well! ::grin::

Hey, I don't know if this is just a problem on my end, but I'm getting "[Error: Invalid poll ID 994162]" even though the time for the poll is not yet up. Did we get more votes than LJ could handle?

I second a negative vote, this time on "fandomonium" because we don't want to be associated with the now defunct fandomonium that claimed it owned the copyright to the word "fandom," and, I believe, capped it off with a C&D letter to others who used it.
