Second Annual Membership Drive

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the OTW's second annual membership drive, which begins today!

In March of 2008, we officially opened the doors for membership in the OTW. If you joined the organization last year, we hope you'll renew your membership this week! And if you haven't yet joined, we hope you'll take this opportunity to do so, and/or to make a donation to help support the OTW.

We are committed to offering our many projects, including the Archive of Our Own (now in limited public beta!), Fanlore, Transformative Works and Cultures, and our new Vidding History project, for free. Contributions from the fan community help to support these projects without relying on advertising revenue. This year we hope to move the Archive of Our Own to colocated servers, which will raise our costs substantially. (If you'd like to know more about colocation, there's a good explanation here.) Membership fees and donations will help support this and our other work in the coming year.

Members not only support the projects of the OTW, they also get one vote in the annual OTW board election, which helps shape the direction of the organization.

A year’s membership in the OTW costs only US $10. Of course, if you want to donate more than that, please do! Several options are available, including easy recurring monthly donations: learn more -- and join! -- at our new online form, which you can find linked from here.

We hope you’ll choose to make a contribution during this membership drive, which will last for one week. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about the OTW--we will do our best to answer them all.

Best wishes,

The Development/Membership Committee of the OTW: Carla, Elizabeth, Ignaz, Monica, Rachel, Shoshanna, and Vera

I thought you might get a kick out of a dream (http://beadattitude.livejournal.com/499811.html) I had last night that turned out to be a Public Service Announcement for OTW! And evidently, there's an OTW superhero! With a cape!

(I also made sure there was a link to the site so folks could donate. Sneaky, me.)

This sounds awesome! (Alas, it does not seem to be viewable by me, but I will take your word for it.) Thank you for the link!

Fandom Invades My Dreams With a Public Service Annoucement

Eeeps! I forgot to unlock! But, so you won't have to go foraging again, here it is:

I dreamt that [livejournal.com profile] unamaga got notified that [livejournal.com profile] face_of_joe was being deleted because of it used too much server space. She was all, well, wow, that's terrible, I'll save it and put the files over here and they were all, "Oh, we deleted it already."

And she said, "WHAT? WITHOUT NOTIFYING ME?"

"Well, sorry, it's marked for deletion, we can't undelete."

"How is it that you have a month to undelete when you cancel your account, then?"

"We're right here, we can say when we delete something. Your comm is marked for deletion."

"THAT MEANS YOU HAVEN'T DELETED IT YET."

"I'm sorry, it's marked for deletion for service violation; I'm not undoing it. I can't undo it."

(All this was via IM, btw.) Anyway the LJ person told her that according to the TOS, they didn't have to notify her for TOS deletion, and she was all, "but it's a server problem, not a TOS problem," and they went back and forth for some time about this and finally he said, "I know it's not a TOS problem, I'm just doing it because you're being a wanker." And she was all, I WILL HAVE YOUR HEAD.

And then? Get this, then OTWonder Woman arrived and said, "Don't worry, we'll use the technobabble technobabble and load it up to our servers and you'll never have this problem again."

And then I woke up and started laughing because not only had my dreams been hijacked by fandom, they'd also become a PSA for The Organization for Transformative Works or OTW (http://transformativeworks.org/)

Let this be a warning and a lesson unto us. Please go donate, even if it's just a wee bit. So we can have servers of our own. We should have servers of our own.

ETA: I was just discussing the superhero who appeared with [livejournal.com profile] misswitch. She wasn't Wonder Woman. She was OTWonder Woman or Transforma or something. I don't know; she didn't say. She did have kind of a Wonder Woman-y outfit with a tiara and arm cuffs and her outfit was the red and white of the OTW logo, and she had the logo all along the border of her cape and on her tiara/headband. And her costume wasn't so much bathing suit shaped as more of a catsuit. It was quite fetching, and the golden tiara and arm thingies were what made it Wonder Womany. I wish I could draw. She was also a red-head. ::nods:: She was awesome!

And why the logo on the cape? Because evidently, I still costume in my sleep and the quite round logo, if placed improperly, would look like wacky nipples or a belly button. ::rolls eyes at self:: Seriously, I wish I could draw.
