Fanfiction is part of modern culture. Is modern culture worth studying? How dead does pop culture have to be before it's worth studying?
I won't even bother listing some of the many, many published authors who have borrowed the worlds, characters, and plots of others. Many of them are quite well-known, and I'm sure you've heard of them. And really, you think fanfiction writers never write--or publish--original fiction? You must not read very much.
(And I'm a scientist, so I'm not exactly personally vested in studying human culture.)
