having read more about the goals and ambitions for the project, it does seem like Drupal is a good, probably the best, choice -- given its scalability and the fact that fanarchive seems to want something that's highly customizable and could grow beyond just a story archive. I'll just reiterate my caution that you should plan to have a developer handy to debug code as necessary (as elements also mentioned below).
