I run my personal sites on drupal, and I LOVE it. but speaking from experience, having a Drupal developer on "staff" would be crucial. precisely because it's so flexible and modular and open source, I've found it necessary to do constant hacking to get all the various components to play nice. and updating, while supposedly a breeze, is a total nightmare when you get third-party modules involved (half the time the ones you need aren't updated, or their updates don't work).
so while I think Drupal is an excellent general CMS, I'm not sure about the logic of using it to run a fiction archive -- as opposed to one of the several existing archive-specific CMSs like media cow (http://media-cow.net).
