Talking Fandom: Writing the unacceptable in fan fiction

I ran across an interesting discussion for consideration: When is it acceptable to have your characters say the unacceptable?

The example in question: characters in a particular fandom who resort to slurs on a regular basis. And of course, even if it’s not prevalent just about every fandom will include some character tic, trait or habit that someone will find objectionable.

Where is the line for you? Do you fell the need to ‘write around’ some characters in your fandoms, or do you let their problematic words and tendencies be what they are? Podfic folks, how do you feel about it – does having to read a character’s words aloud affect how you write them?
