Memory and Perception in Fandom

Banner for OTW"s "Talking Fandom" posts of an open book with red fabric bookmark and ornate text.

Are there particular story themes that draw you in? For me, a story about memory will do it almost every time.

I don’t mean nostalgia, though; I think nostalgia gets a little more expensive every year that we live and love and lose people, places, and things important to us. I’m thinking more of shows/movies/books that explore how much of our selves are wrapped up in our memories. They’re a force of nature that can really dictate who we are, yet we don’t think about that much until something happens to drive it home.

I also love stories that play with the idea of how we remember events versus how events really played out. Or stories that use flashbacks, flashforwards, and sideways. Anything that sets time and memory on their ears a little – sign me up for that!

How about you? Any favorite stories about memory that you think of or read/watch often?
